The Sierra Nevada, often referred to as "The Range of Light," offers some of the most spectacular skiing in California. The mountains stretch across the state, with Yosemite National Park and Lake Tahoe being two of the most popular destinations. However, as a local, I'll let you in on a few secret spots that are sure to provide an unforgettable experience.

Mammoth Mountain: A Local's Favorite

Mammoth Mountain is one of the largest ski resorts in California, offering 3,500 acres of skiable terrain. Located in the Eastern Sierra, Mammoth is known for its light, dry powder and long ski season. As a local, I can attest that this resort offers some of the best skiing in the state.

The mountain offers something for every level, from gentle groomers to challenging double-black diamond runs. One of my favorite trails is the "Stump Alley" area, which features wide-open bowls and stunning views of the surrounding landscape.

Big Bear Mountain Resort

Located in Southern California's San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Mountain Resort is a local favorite for skiing and snowboarding. The resort offers 19 lifts and over 400 acres of skiable terrain, including some great beginner trails and challenging expert runs.

One of the best things about Big Bear is its proximity to Los Angeles – it's only a two-hour drive from the city! This makes it an ideal destination for a quick weekend getaway or a longer family vacation. The resort also offers excellent snowmaking capabilities, ensuring a good snowpack even in lean years.

Kirkwood Mountain Resort

Located on the California-Nevada border, Kirkwood Mountain Resort is known for its world-class skiing and stunning views of Lake Tahoe. As a local, I can attest that this resort offers some of the most spectacular skiing in the state, with over 2,000 acres of skiable terrain.

Kirkwood features an incredible variety of trails, from gentle groomers to challenging double-black diamond runs. One of my favorite trails is the "Twin Lakes" area, which features stunning views of the surrounding landscape and some of the best skiing in the state.

Getting Around

All three resorts are accessible by car, with Mammoth Mountain being the most remote. Big Bear is located near the intersection of Interstate 10 and Highway 330, making it easily accessible from Los Angeles. Kirkwood is located just off Highway 88 in the Sierra Nevada mountains.
