The Underrated Beauty of Monterey's Coastline

Monterey and its surrounding coastline are a treasure trove of natural wonders, from the iconic Bixby Bridge to the stunning Point Lobos State Natural Reserve. This stretch of California's Pacific Coast Highway 1 is often overlooked by visitors flocking to more famous destinations like Big Sur or Yosemite, but trust us: it's an absolute must-see.

The Ultimate Road Trip Experience

As you drive along Highway 1, the scenic views are breathtaking – rolling hills give way to towering cliffs, and the ocean stretches out as far as the eye can see. Be sure to stop at all of the designated pull-outs and overlooks, but also take your time driving through the winding roads that twist and turn through the coastal mountains.

One of the highlights of this drive is the Bixby Bridge, a picturesque archway that spans a deep gorge and offers breathtaking views of the coastline below. This is an ideal spot for photographers and nature lovers alike – take your time to soak in the scenery, and don't be afraid to get out and explore.

Exploring Point Lobos State Natural Reserve

Just south of Monterey lies Point Lobos, a 1,200-acre reserve that's often referred to as the "crown jewel" of the California state park system. With its dramatic coastline, hidden coves, and an incredible array of marine life – including sea lions, seals, and over 300 species of birds – this is an experience not to be missed.

Take a leisurely stroll through the reserve's many trails, which range from easy day-hikes to more challenging summit climbs. Be sure to bring your binoculars for some amazing bird-watching opportunities, or simply sit back and take in the stunning views.
