Hiking the Kelso Dunes in the Mojave National Preserve

The Kelso Dunes, located within the Mojave National Preserve, are a hiker's paradise. Rising 650 feet above the surrounding desert floor, these towering sand dunes offer breathtaking views and a unique hiking experience. As you walk through the dunes, the soft sand shifts beneath your feet, creating a surreal landscape that's both challenging and rewarding.

Getting There

The Mojave National Preserve is located in San Bernardino County, California, approximately 2 hours northeast of Los Angeles. To access the Kelso Dunes, follow the paved Kelbaker Road (also known as Kelbaker Pass Road) from the preserve's south entrance. The road winds through the preserve, eventually leading to a parking area near the dunes.

What to Expect

The hike to the top of the Kelso Dunes is a moderately strenuous 2-mile round-trip journey. The terrain is sandy and uneven, with steep inclines and declines throughout. Be prepared for hot desert conditions, including intense sun, limited shade, and unpredictable sandstorms.

As you climb the dunes, the scenery changes dramatically. The surrounding landscape flattens out, and the dunes rise up like giant waves. From the top, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the preserve's vast expanse, with the Little Kelso Dunes and the Amboy Crater in the distance.

Practical Tips

Before attempting to hike the Kelso Dunes, be sure to:

  • Bring plenty of water (at least 2 gallons per person) and stay hydrated throughout the hike
  • Wear comfortable hiking shoes or boots with good traction
  • Pack a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen to protect yourself from the sun
  • Bring a map and compass or GPS device to navigate the preserve's trails
  • Respect the preserve's rules and regulations, including any closures or restrictions
